SKIN CARE REVIEWS

12.10.22DISCLAIMER

Egyptian Magic is a skin care brand that has amassed a cult following because of their “magic” All-Purpose Skin Cream. Making its debut in 1991, Egyptian Magic All-Purpose Skin Cream is a healing balm formulated with natural ingredients that can be used for a variety of purposes. Even celebrity makeup artists, models, and actresses – like Kate Hudson and Ashley Benson – swear by Egyptian Magic cream.

So is Egyptian Magic cream really the secret to glowing skin or is it all hype? In order to answer this question, we’ll have to review this product with a scientific lens, meaning we’ll evaluate the research that supports (or doesn’t support) the ingredients that you’ll find in this product. We’ll also share some Egyptian Magic reviews so you can get a better idea of what customers really think about this product.

What is Egyptian Magic Cream?

Egyptian Magic Cream is a multi-purpose skin cream that contains just six naturally-derived ingredients:

  • Olive oil
  • Beeswax
  • Honey
  • Bee pollen
  • Royal jelly
  • Bee propolis

Egyptian Magic Cream does not contain additives, added preservatives, fragrances, parabens, or GMO ingredients.

What Are The Key Ingredients in Egyptian Magic Cream?

Like we mentioned above, the Egyptian Magic formula only contains olive oil, beeswax, honey, bee pollen, royal jelly, and bee propolis. So are these ingredients really as healing as the brand claims they are? Below we’ll discuss the research that supports the purported benefits of these ingredients.

The Egyptian Magic formula does not contain any water. Instead, the base of this cream is olive oil. Olive oil contains several different fatty acids, but is mostly composed of oleic acid (65 to 85%). Oleic acid is an omega-9 monounsaturated fatty that functions as a penetration enhancer. A publication in the Journal of Controlled Release states, “Penetration enhancers such as oleic acid (OA), which increase skin permeability, appear to act selectively on the extracellular lipids representing the principal regulatory channel for the penetration of small molecules.” This is not necessarily a bad thing; in fact, using oils high in oleic acid can help other beneficial ingredients penetrate into the skin. Plus, it is quickly absorbed and leaves no greasy feeling.

The next key ingredient in Egyptian Magic cream is beeswax, a natural wax produced by honeybees in the cell walls of honeycombs. There are about 300 compounds found in beeswax, including alkanes, acids, esters, polyesters, and hydroxy esters. The components that make up beeswax have been shown to relieve inflammation, as well as have antimicrobial and regenerative effects.

Beeswax is also a humectant moisturizer. Humectants have a molecular structure with several hydrophilic (water loving) groups, which allows them to attract and retain the moisture in the air nearby via absorption. Lastly, beeswax acts as an emollient and occlusive agent. It forms a soft, protective barrier on the surface of skin, which helps to prevent evaporation of the skin’s natural moisture. Over time, this increases skin hydration by causing buildup of water in the stratum corneum (the uppermost layer of skin). The barrier also protects the skin from environmental factors that may irritate the skin. Therefore, the use of beeswax in the Egyptian Magic cream should help to keep the skin moisturized and soft.

Honey is another bee product used in Egyptian Magic cream. According to a publication in the journal Molecules, honey contains at least 181 ingredients. It is a supersaturated carbohydrates solution containing mainly glucose and fructose. Honey also contains enzymes, organic acids, phenolic acids and flavonoids, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and more.

Honey is an excellent natural skin care ingredient because of its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Honey’s antibacterial properties are great for those with acne prone skin since excess sebum and bacteria clogging pores can lead to blemishes. Since honey is anti-inflammatory, those who suffer with sensitivity or skin conditions such as eczema or rosacea may see a particular improvement. Lastly, honey contains varying concentrations of polyphenols, which are powerful antioxidants.

The bee pollen in Egyptian Magic cream is excellent for healing and rejuvenating the skin because it is very nutrient dense, containing vitamins, minerals, amino acids, phytochemicals, carotenoids, flavonoids, and phytosterols. Bee pollen is a potent antifungal, antimicrobial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory. Bee pollen may also help with blemishes, wrinkles, and dark spots.

Another bee product in the Egyptian Magic cream is royal jelly, a honey bee secretion that is considered to be one of the world’s most nutrient-rich substances, packed with protein and more than 100 nutrients, including essential amino acids, minerals, vitamins B1, B2, B5, B6, C, E, biotin, niacin, and folate. It is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, anti-allergic, antioxidant, toning, and antiaging. In addition, royal jelly is highly moisturizing, and affects hydration of the stratum corneum by retaining water in it. This helps the skin become more elastic and better moisturized.

The final ingredient in Egyptian Magic cream is bee propolis, a resinous mixture produced by honey bees. It is rich in nutrients, such as magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, beta-carotene, bioflavonoids, and vitamins B1 and B2. Research demonstrates that bee propolis is antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. It can even reduce pain thanks to chrysin, a flavonoid that provides an analgesic effect. This is why Egyptian Magic cream may be very helpful for soothing small cuts, scrapes, burns, and other skin irritations.

Egyptian Magic Reviews

There aren’t any Egyptian Magic reviews on the brand’s website, which is why we looked to Amazon to evaluate the Egyptian Magic reviews. After more than 9,000 customer reviews, Egyptian Magic All-Purpose Skin Cream has received an average rating of 4.4 out of 5 stars.

One very positive review comes from a customer who actually has very oily skin and was hesitant to try the product, but says, “I used it at night. Very little. Which goes a long way. When I woke up my skin was incredibly soft. Little blackheads and bumps had basically disappeared and I couldn’t believe how good my skin felt. And the best part is my skin doesn’t feel as oily anymore. My makeup looks so much better. I now use it for nails, cracked feet and lips. I still only use it at night to give my skin a moisture mask.”

There are plenty of other Egyptian Magic reviews from customers who were pleased that this product truly can help with a variety of skin concerns. For example, one review says, “Okay, I won’t lie and say it worked over night because nothing does… BUT I have been consistent in putting a small amount on my acne scars, it’s been about a month and I can honestly say they are almost gone! I also have a 1 year old who is constantly getting scratched up- a little bit of this and those marks are erased in no time! Idk who has been hiding this little bottle of heaven from me but I am glad I found it!”

The only negative Egyptian Magic reviews on Amazon are actually about a problem with fake products being sold on Amazon. For example, customers who purchased the real Egyptian Magic at a health food store and then on Amazon can tell there is a difference. This is something to be aware of if you plan to purchase Egyptian Magic on Amazon.

I have a very red and inflamed eczema patch on my hand and got excited reading the packaging and in particular the magic ingredients thinking that this would really help. My experience was that it made it worse- the skin would become more red and inflamed immediately after use, and after a good amount of time I saw no improvement to either the dryness, itch or eczema.
This looks and feels like petroleum jelly/Vaseline, and doesn’t smell of anything despite its apparent ingredients, I felt no benefit using it at all.
I’ve now gone to a dermatologist who has prescribed steroids, let’s hope they work better.

I just started using in on face daily about a month ago. It stung a little when I would apply it at nigh,t and my skin would get a little red. I kept using it, and just realized my face is discolored and red looking, like contact dermatitius I guess. Hopefully this will go away. I came online to find others who had similar experiences, and yours is the only one I have come across so far. Thanks for posting!

I have my own skincare/makeup line, Shade For Humanity by Jill Adelyn Aesthetics, with an online store. I’ve been working on a Rescue Balm formulation and am going to incorporate the propanol and royal jelly into the balm as soon as I return from India. Otherwise I was pretty close to spot on. I’m excited to put it on my website.

I used this product daily for about 5 years and was a raving fan! In the last few months I developed a contact dermatitis on the cheek bone area of my face which became blotchy red and scaled. After much trail and error, the culprit seems to be Egyptian Magic. Are there similar reports?

This is a bunch of quack. Egyptian Magic was nothing but pure petroleum jelly until natural stores like Whole Foods finally started getting natural and started dropping Egyptian Magic. That is when Egyptian Magic changed to a simple natural formula that you can make at home. And as many times as I have been to Egypt I haven’t seen olive trees. They are highly uncommon in Egypt. Egyptians used oils like behen and balanites- those are what were found in the tombs.
